Description: Edwin Howland Blashfield was born in New York and as he grew up, he prepared for a life as an engineer: studying at Harvard, Boston, and MIT. He later grew into a love of art and began sending some of his works to French academic painter Jean Léon Gérôme. His interest in painting then convinced his father to finally allow Blashfield to fully pursue his career in art. He studied under a few artists in France until war brought him back to New York to paint genre scenes, much like this painting. This artist is well known for his murals, marine, and genre scenes. His most notable commission would be a mural he did in the United States Library of Congress. His work has illuminated the activities of everyday life and he adds immense emotion to the faces of his characters. This painting is truly spectacular and comes signed, with frame!
