Who we are

We started this journey over two decades ago, dealing privately in New York. Now, we are thrilled to tell the story of such impeccable artists in our gallery in the historic Fredericksburg, VA!

Our History

1970s:

Michael and Julie grew up with an appreciation of art and antiques in family collections.

1980s:

Michael collected baseball cards in his adolescence, players such as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson; the great players of the past. Michael learned about condition, misprints, off center/on center, rarity, and popular draw. Some of these cards helped fund his college tuition.

1990s:

A love and awe of nature inspired Michael to buy his first painting, a Hudson River School landscape that he still owns today.

1999:

Michael went to work at a New York City auction house and gained over 10 years of experience in a fraction of that time. There, he learned to trace the provenance of a piece of art, analyze its condition, to examine the backs of paintings and make sense of it and to understand the difference of quality between paintings. Lastly, he learned how to appreciate period frames and the aesthetic value they add to the paintings.

2001:

Michael and Julie started privately dealing in paintings and sculptures under the name Kaaterskill Falls Fine Art and then later transferred it to their last name, Meyer Fine Art. They built a reputation behind the scenes in the American Art market. Michael excelled in finding art (or as some in the business call it, a “picker”). Prior to the internet auctions, he went out to find the “best of the best” where other people weren’t looking. Michael then sold these finds privately to the most affluent dealers and collectors. Today, artwork that Michael and Julie have once owned can be found in spectacular museums and private collections all over the country.

2006:

Michael was a guest curator on a project with US State Department in Lisbon, Portugal for Ambassador Al Hoffman. Their mission was to gather great works of art that would promote the history of the United States overseas. They started with the great accomplishments of Christopher Columbus sailing across the Atlantic, the American Revolution, the successes of George Washington, the Lewis and Clark expedition, the War of 1812, national commerce, and America’s western expansion. They ended with President Dwight Eisenhower, who helped liberate Europe in World War II when he was general of the Atlantic theater.

2022:

After dealing privately in the New York metropolitan area for over twenty years, Michael and Julie relocated to Virginia and opened a gallery for the first time ever, Meyer Fine Art Gallery.

2023:

Michael decided it was time to properly display and present his research on Robert S. Duncanson. On June 14th, 2023, he opened the first exhibition held in Meyer Fine Art Gallery titled “Robert S. Duncanson and his Courageous Southern Travels.” This exhibition proudly presented over 40 paintings of this forgotten artist and he received global publicity for his research. He ultimately produced an 100 page catalog that coincided with the exhibition that told the story of Robert Duncanson painting underground railroad paths to freedom.
