Description: This painting depicts the world famous Untermeyer Garden in Yonkers, New York. Sawyer was an American painter, illustrator, and photographer. He took photographs and made paintings of the discoveries from the Pepper-Hearst Expedition. His photographs have been featured in The Florida Museum of Natural History. He also has works at the National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institution and the University Museum at University of Pennsylvania. The Library of Florida History and Smithsonian have collections of his papers. He illustrated for the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Tribune. He switched to painting landscapes and castles after his move to Spain and travels throughout Europe. He also had painting trips through South and Central America. This piece is representative of his works in the mid 20th century as he switched from detailed illustrations and photography to a more impressionist style with whispy brushstrokes. This painting is signed lower left and comes with its frame!
