Description: George Henry Smillie was an American painter and etcher. He became a member of the National Academy of Design in 1882. He often painted both in oils and in water colour. His favourite subjects were scenes along the New England coast. 1885 George Smillie and his wife made an extended tour of Europe. He was elected an academician of the National Academy of Design in 1882 and served as recording secretary from 1892 to 1902. He was also an early member, and later an officer, of the American Water Color Society. He was influenced by his fathers translation engravings of many popular Hudson River School founders. This allowed him to create many different landscape styles and tones in his work. This warm autumn scene is a great example of his mastery of landscape art and is in excellent condition. It is signed, titled, and dated on the back “On the Bronx River” painted by George H Smillie c. 1910.
